Organic Carbon in Soils of the World
نویسنده
چکیده
The loss of organic matter from soil is mainly the result of the clearing of forests for grassland or cropland. On the basis of the assumptions outlined here, the annual loss of organic carbon from the world's soils is between 2.5 x 1015g and 7.4 x 1015g, with 4.6 x 1015g being considered a realistic estimate. These amounts are 0.2, 0.5 and 0.3 per cent of the toial organic carbon (1477x 1015g) currently estimated to exist in the world's soils. Since the total organic carbon in soil in prehistoric times has been estimated as 2014 x 1015g, the loss since then has been 537 x 1015g, or 27 per cent of the amount present prior to the spread of civilization in the last two millennia.

Effect of a long-term cultivation and crop rotations on organic carbon in loess derived soils of Golestan Province, Northern Iran
The effects of 34 years cultivation on organic carbon content of the loess derived soils were studied in Golestan province, northern Iran. Soil organic carbon (SOC) showed significant decrease in most of cases. The minimum and maximum SOC decreases were 4 and 51.14 Mg C ha-1/30 cm for 34 years. In a few cases there was an increase in SOC up to 16.93 Mg C ha-1/30 cm over the period of 34 years i...

Soil Organic Carbon Stocks and Nitrogen Content Comparison in Different Slope Positions in Native Grasslands and Adjacent Cultivated Soils (Case Study: Kermanshah Mountain Rangelands, Iran)
Global warming has been largely driven by increasing atmospheric GHG (Green House Gasses), particularly carbon dioxide caused by fossil fuels burning. The current trend can not be stopped except by reducing fossil fuel consumption or storing organic carbon in soil or earthchr('39')s biological systems such as forests, rangelands and agricultural systems. This study was conducted to determine th...
متن کاملThe Impacts of Land Use Change in Soil Carbon and Nitrogen Stocks (Case Study Shahmirzad Lands, Semnan Province, Iran)
Soil carbon and nitrogen contents play an important role in sustaining soil physical and chemical quality and help to have healthy environments. The continues conversion of rangelands to arable lands has the potential to change carbon and nitrogen sequestration. In this study to evaluate the effects of land use change on soil organic carbon and nitrogen stock, forty samples collected from north...
متن کاملPotential of Carbon Sequestration of Hammada salicornica Vegetation Type in Desert Areas (Case Study: South Khorasan, Iran)
Climate change due to increasing the level of greenhouse gases including CO2 is the main environmental issue of the world in the new century. One of the effective way for reducing atmospheric CO2 is carbon sequestration by plants and soils. A vast area of Iran has desert condition with special adapted plant species in which can be devoted for carbon sequestration. Hammada salicornica as a shrub...

Organic carbon is the most important component of terrestrial ecosystems and any change in its abundance can have a major impact on the processes that take place in ecosystem. The aim of this study was to estimate carbon sequestration in three different elevations (200 to 1200 m from sea level) and according to vegetation type in the Khairoodkenar forest. The highest carbon sequestration was ob...
